Boston College's Ryan wins Manning Award
Quarterback Matt Ryan took a quick break from his NFL draft audition tour Tuesday night, stopping in New Orleans to accept the Manning Award, given to the nation's top college quarterback.
Ryan, who is expected to be the first quarterback drafted later this month, is the fourth recipient of the award, which is presented by the Allstate Sugar Bowl. He joins JaMarcus Russell of LSU, Vince Young of Texas and Matt Leinart of Southern Cal.
"It's very special for me to receive the Manning Award," said Matt Ryan, who led Boston College to an 11-3 record last season, the Eagles' highest win total since 1940. "I've been able to watch all the winners the past couple years, and to be part of that now is pretty special."
When someone pointed out that all three previous winners went on to become top-10 draft picks, Ryan said, "That doesn't hurt either. It's a special fraternity . . . Hopefully I can follow in their footsteps."
Ryan is the ACC's Offensive Player of the Year after completing 59.3 percent of his passes for 4,507 yards and 31 touchdowns. The Eagles were ranked No. 2 in the BCS standings after an 8-0 start. They stumbled a bit down the stretch but finished with a victory over Michigan State in the Champs Sports Bowl.
Archie Manning, the namesake of the award along with sons Peyton and Eli, said he personally considered Ryan's attitude and character along with his performance when placing his vote for him.
"I know the boys were really impressed, too," Manning said. "I guess I shouldn't tip off who voted for who, but I know the boys all voted for Matt. We just think he's an outstanding winner for us."
The award is voted on by a panel of local and national media, as well as each of the Mannings. Florida's Tim Tebow, who won the Heisman Trophy, finished second.
